Poisonous Spiders – The BROWN RECLUSE

The Brown Recluse is not in its natural habitat in Florida. There have been specimens of the Brown Recluse found in Florida but most entomologists find no indication that is able to live and reproduce in the state’s environment. Because it can live in old boxes, furniture and other containers it is easily transported to all parts of the country by humans.

The Brown Recluse Spider is identified by a dark violin shaped mark located behind the eyes. It has 3 pairs of eyes, most spiders have 4 pair. The Brown Recluse is not a large spider, being only one fourth to one half inch in length.

The Brown Recluse spider is not aggressive and will not attack or bite unless trapped in clothing or maybe rolled on by a person while they are sleeping. Humans bitten by a Brown Recluse Spider may not feel pain for two to three hours. A sensitive person may feel pain immediately. A blister will form around the bite. The local pain becomes very intense with the tissue beginning to rot away often down to the bone. The healing process of this wound may take 6 to 8 weeks. There have been cases where a person had problems of healing for months and even years.

In Florida physicians do diagnose Brown Recluse bites. If a Brown Recluse is suspected in a spider bite case, collect the spider if possible and seek medical care immediately.
